The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned in Egypt during the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. Since 1350 BCE, they have stood in the Theban Necropolis, located west of the River Nile from the modern city of Luxor, They are made from blocks of quartzite sandstone which were quarried at el-Gabal el-Ahmar (near Cairo) and transported 675 km overland to Thebes (Luxor). The stones are believed to be too heavy to have been transported up stream the Nile
It was acting as guardians to the Temple of Amenhotep III. The Colossi of Memnon were meant to protect the Pharaoh’s temple from evil. Even though after the temple was destroyed by a severe earthquake, the Colossi of Memnon remains standing strongly for thousands of years. The figures rise 60 ft (18 meters) high and weigh 720 tons each.
